James Imbriani: Travel Consultant, specializing in culinary travel.
Where did you Just Get Back from? Vietnam – Hanoi, Hoi An, Hue, Mekong Delta, and Saigon.
When were you in Vietnam? October 2015, for two weeks.
“I visited Vietnam as part of my research for a new ALTOUR culinary travel brand launching soon, called Sapore (saporetravel.com). That being said, I was there to experience the culture through its food and that’s exactly what I did. I was amazed at how diverse and delicious Vietnam’s food was, and all the highlights of my trip took place around a table – including some really small plastic ones on the street!”
Words to describe what you felt when you first arrived: Sensory overload – bombarded with all new sights, smells, sounds, and tastes.
Where did you stay?
- Hanoi – The Metropole
- Hoi An – The Nam Hai
- Hue – La Residence
- Saigon – Park Hyatt
With whom would you recommend staying at this hotel / resort? The Nam Hai is a perfect retreat for couples or a honeymoon. The hotels in the rest of the country would be great for a variety of different types of travelers, but Vietnam could definitely be a challenging destination for families with younger children.
Tempt us- Name the most special place you discovered on this trip: Bun bo hue for breakfast down a small, no-name alley in Hue. They open at 6am and are totally sold out each morning by around 9am.
What is the best time of year to go, in your opinion? If you are planning on visiting the entire country, it’s probably best to go February through May, or September/October.
